Reading Response 4
This non-fiction reading Response is about sleep and the amount college students get. This is targeting the college students to inform them on the impact that sleep and caffeine has on them.
Sleep is a complicated thing. Growing up, I used to fight sleep. I wanted to stay awake to experience the night and its beauty. As I've grown older, I have realized how much more sleep I need to get through day-to-day life. Going into college, my sleep schedule was the best it has been in years, but as the semester goes on it has been rapidly declining. I find myself staying up late to finish assignments, or my brain will begin to wonder all over the place. This has caused me to fall into a bad sleep cycle. As the article mentions, it is common for this to happen to college students stressing about their assignments.
In the article they talk about feeling trapped and unaccomplished as a student. There are so many papers to worry about, tests to try and get good grades on, and assignments to finish. Sleeping is a privilege that we all take for granted. So, when we choose not to get the proper amount of sleep, it affects us in so many ways.
There were many parts of the article that I found myself questioning. Why do people of all ages need different amounts of sleep to function properly throughout their day? I think it is because we all have different habits, jobs, and overall lives. So, we need sleep according to how busy and chaotic our day-to-day lives are. As humans we have different chemicals offered to us. Caffeine being one of them, and we use it as an energizer. Why is it that people consume so much, and it has such a huge impact on their day-to-day lives? There must be a connection between the quality of sleep and the amount of caffeine consumed daily.
Reading the paper, I wanted to speak with the author, because the mystery of sleep to energy has always been a curiosity of mine. If I were able to ask the author any questions they would be; why is sleep so vital in our daily lives, why was the narrator's brain able to focus so well on the test but not on their lectures, and how are we supposed to know how much sleep we need personally?
